Dam break! 30,000 affected homes. Flooding in Tula, Hidalgo, Mexico

As the floods in Hidalgo worsened on Wednesday, authorities ordered some residents of Tula and Ixmiquilpan to evacuate their homes. The flooding of the dam exacerbated the floods in Central Mexico, where nine municipalities were submerged. One of the flooded dams was the Dansho Dam in Hirotepek, the state of Mexico adjacent to Hidalgo.

Hidalgo Governor Omar Fayad also ordered the evacuation of central Tula and elsewhere in the Mesquital Valley. Soldiers and National Guard were deployed to assist in evacuation in both residential and commercial areas. Three military helicopters and four boats supported the effort.

At least 1000 people left Ismikirpan’s home and evacuated to shelters, and hundreds of Tlahuelilpan residents were also evacuated.

The Salado River was flooded with the latter municipality, which was declared a disaster zone. At least 5000 people were at risk in Taeson Tepec because they live near the same river, and 3000 homes were affected in Tula

. At least 30000 homes were affected by the flood as of Thursday morning, according to the Federal Civil Protection Agency. Governor Fayad said 11 schools, 3 hospitals, and numerous bridges were also damaged.

The governor warned on Wednesday that floods could continue to worsen as it continued to rain in neighboring Mexico and Mexico City. Near the Tula River, floods as high as two meters can occur, he said.
